Negative positive
Paper negative printing by Andrew Sanderson, from Ag22

Andrew Sanderson has been a committed (he would say obsessed) photographer for 23 years. During that time he has worked as a professional printer and as a freelance, doing advertising/design work as well as portraiture, press, sports and many other things besides. For the past 10 years he has also been teaching photography part time. Even when working professionally his heart has always been in the artistic end of photography, and he has been selling his personal work since he began. I have had work published in many magazines and a few books. During the ‘80s his posters sold all over the world, and his work has been published in many magazines and books. The work spans many styles and techniques and he has just written a book on night photography for Argentum, due out around now. He also has a gallery in Holmfirth which is run in partnership with two business partners, Debbie and Catherine.

The pictures featured here are from a series of cityscapes that Sanderson has been exploring as a long-term project on (so far): Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow, Nottingham and Manchester. The images here are from the Manchester part of the project. The original idea was to show city architecture as bold shapes and tones, using light to play the shapes off against each other. ‘I wanted to get away from the usual way of showing buildings in full colour, on large format, and in good light,’ explains Sanderson. ‘The paper negative technique employed seemed ideal: prints done in this way work better if fine detail is not important to the strength of the image, leaving the pictures as areas of shape and tone.‘

As often happens in many areas of creativity projects can take on a life of their own and dictate a different direction. I am a great believer in being open to other possibilities in my work. I can 'nail it down' if the project requires it and control every aspect of the process, but for personal pictures this is not always desirable. It is in these situations that the unconscious mind often takes a hand and produces better work if allowed free rein.’ Next Page >>
