Second Prize: Daniel Lillie with 'I'll See You On the Far Post' |
|||||||||||||||
Daniel Lillie graduated last year from the highly regarded documentary photography course at University of Wales, Newport. So it’s no surprise that his entry, I’ll see you on the far post … , is documentary in nature. The subject of his book project is the people of a small estate in Newport, Maesglas, and the title is a local term of endearment meaning, in essence, “I’ll see you in the future.” Like the winning entrant, Lillie opted to present the work with just one image per spread, allowing each to be viewed alone, rather than forcing or suggesting a connection to an adjacent image. As he says: “I felt that each image should be an individual moment, ambiguous and not anchored by any sort of captioning.” (By contrast, the judges felt that captions identifying the subjects would have done no harm.) He sequenced the pictures “to develop several consecutive narratives; faces re-occur, families are glimpsed at different times; a party, a funeral, a Saturday afternoon. The photographs dwell on the intimate and supportive friendships.” |
